Cohort X forges a new approach to leadership

Six community leaders embodying a different paradigm of leading in the pursuit of climate and gender justice. 

This is the vision of Cohort X, a constellation of six community leaders coming together over the next nine months to reflect, engage, and learn from one another. The cohort will pursue a peer learning model, with support from mentors, facilitators, and community.

As the world screams out for a change in direction, Cohort X strives to let go of western colonial and siloed approaches to leadership in favour of intersectional, community-centred approaches based on deep relationship-building.

Moving away from 20th-century western colonial mindsets is “easier said than done,” said Tatiana Fraser, CKX Board Chair and co-founder of MetaLab and The System Sanctuary, and Joanna Kerr, CEO of MakeWay, who supported the design of the Cohort X concept. “Despite best intentions, we often get stuck. We follow the well-worn path of the way that things have always been done. We perpetuate and reinforce the very hierarchies and silos that we aspire to break free from. We forget that change takes time, deep relationships (not silver bullets) and abundant resources.” 

That’s why MakeWay and Community Knowledge Exchange partnered to invest in creating more intentional spaces to do this work. 

The outcomes of the first-ever Cohort X will be shaped by its participants, with the support of community facilitators and mentors. Building on the principle that there is no learning without reflection, no reflection without relationship, and no relationship without time, the experience will emerge and develop through co-creation and collaboration.
