Congratulations to the 18 First Nations and Province of British Columbia who celebrated a historic milestone with the signing of the Marine Planning Partnership (MaPP) marine plans for coastal BC.
MaPP is an innovative partnership between coastal First Nations and the Province of BC. The MaPP plans provide recommendations for key areas of marine management, including uses, stewardship, and economic development on the North Pacific Coast. The signing ceremony and celebration, held on April 27 at the BC Parliament Buildings in Victoria, marked the completion of the planning phase.
The MaPP plans are ambitious in scope—covering two-thirds of the provincial coastline—and in breadth, encompassing human well-being, economic development, and conservation values. They are globally significant because of the richness of the ecosystems, habitats, and species they protect. Moving forward, MaPP has the potential to contribute to new models of oceans governance—an achievement to celebrate.
Canada’s Pacific watersheds are home to diverse First Nations. Stewardship of natural resources is an inherent part of First Nations culture; their histories and identities are inextricably linked to the rainforest, its rivers and streams, and the ocean. Tides Canada supports the region’s communities in building healthy, effective leaders and institutions to steward their territories for future generations. We are also committed to the development of formal terrestrial and marine use plans that reflect significant community and ecological values. We are excited to be celebrating MaPP’s accomplishments with First Nations and the Province of BC.
