How can philanthropy work in true partnership to uplift Indigenous-led work?
On Thursday, November 14, we held an online conversation with MakeWay and the Right Relations Collaborative, reflecting on our shared journey and the lessons we’ve learned over the past four years.
When the Right Relations Collaborative launched in 2020, it sparked excitement across so-called “Canada” with its unique approach to correcting power imbalances in philanthropy and supporting Indigenous-led initiatives. Guided by a Council of Aunties and hosted by MakeWay, it’s become a global model of relational, trust-based philanthropy.
Now, we celebrate a milestone as the Right Relations Collaborative transitions from its home at MakeWay to become an independent non-profit.
Speakers:
- ‘Cúagilákv (Jess H̓áust̓i), co-lead of the Right Relations Collaborative
- Joanna Kerr, President and CEO of MakeWay
During their candid dialogue, Jess Housty and Joanna Kerr shared the story of the Collaborative’s beginnings and its efforts to reshape funding practices and shift power to Indigenous communities. It was an honest, inspiring conversation about how philanthropy can build stronger relationships to support the work of Indigenous organizations.
A big thank you to everyone who joined us this day.
