The Northern Birthwork Collective’s mission is to create culturally safe and gender inclusive spaces, programming and services for our community as it relates to reproductive health, pregnancy, birth, postpartum and the parenting journey.

Our goals for the outcome of our programming are for our community to be informed, empowered, supported, and to feel a sense of belonging throughout these stages of their lifespan.

The Northern Birthwork Collective acknowledges that the current gaps in the healthcare system are felt the most by the BIPOC and 2SLGBTQ+ community, and so providing care to them will be our primary focus.

“The Northern Birthwork Collective was born over discussions between friends and colleagues regarding how we can all use our individual skills and privileges to start addressing the harm that has been and continues to be caused by the lack of inclusive and culturally safe support provided to birthing people, especially those in the BIPOC and 2SLGBTQ+ community. As a doula, I have been witness to this harm first hand while attending births, listening to my clients experiences and through the countless testimonials and stories I’ve read about queer and racialized folks moving through the medical system.

“When I moved up to Yellowknife, NT I saw a huge gap in the north in terms of services and supports that were geared towards supporting our most vulnerable and oppressed people during this transformative time in their lives. While the systems they live under are the ones that are oppressing them, and creating that vulnerability, I believe that these life-giving humans in fact hold an incredible amount of power, courage and strength, and are just in need of safer, more supportive spaces and services to connect to that innate power! The Northern Birthwork Collective aims to create those spaces and services for our community and I am so thrilled, excited, overjoyed and humbled to be Project Director for the NBC and to play my part in doing this important work.”
