December 2, 2024—Today, we share important news about a significant leadership transition at MakeWay. It is with deep gratitude that we announce Joanna Kerr will be stepping down as President and CEO in March 2025, after six years of remarkable leadership.
Joanna joined MakeWay in 2019, bringing clarity and strength that have guided our organization through a period of transformation and growth. Under her leadership, we rebranded from Tides Canada and crafted our first external strategic plan, firmly rooted in supporting community-led systems change and taking a holistic approach to environmental, economic, and social challenges.
During this time the organization was able to attract new funding to launch programs in under-served Northern geographies. The Shared Platform—home to many incredible and diverse initiatives—grew its impact. We better aligned our toolkit of supports with our vision, including the addition of community-advised funds and an impact investment strategy.
Joanna’s energy, authenticity, and relational approach have been pivotal in forming significant partnerships with both funders and community-driven projects. She has championed the need to shift power externally within the philanthropic sector, reminding us of what’s possible for nature and communities to thrive together.
Internally, Joanna has been a strong advocate for a culture of collective leadership and invested in significant supports for staff well-being, particularly during times of difficulty, including the Covid-19 pandemic and the intense wildfires in many parts of the country.
“As we embark on this transition, we really want to honour this moment,” said Aerin Jacob, Chair of the Search Committee of the Board of Directors. “We will take time to celebrate Joanna’s immense contributions and the profound impact she has made, while also looking forward to new opportunities ahead.”
Joanna herself reflects, “MakeWay is a remarkable ecosystem, filled with leaders, partners, and funders committed to driving meaningful change. We are approaching our 25th anniversary and the development of our next strategic plan with collective strength. I feel incredibly fortunate to have contributed to MakeWay’s journey, and I believe this next chapter is best served by fresh leadership.”
After her departure in March, Joanna will continue her work as an Integral Coach™ and strategist working with leaders around the world.
Facilitating this transition, the Board of Directors has engaged Griffith Group to assist in the search for a new President and CEO. We are excited for what lies ahead for MakeWay and grateful for the foundations that Joanna has built.
